Calculating Power Requirements in WattHours
To determine the number of required Solar Panels and Batteries, you will first have to calculate your estimated power requirements in WattHours. WattHours is simply the amount of power (in Watts) times the number of hours of use. For example, if your Television uses 500 watts and you watch TV for 4 hours, that is 2000 WattHours (4 X 500). This is the same as 2000 Watts for 1 hour (1 X 2000) or, 2 KiloWattHours. 1 KiloWatt is 1000 Watts. This is how your utility company bills you, by the number of KiloWattHours (KWH) per month. To use the free, interactive System Sizing Tool, just click the Size/Power Rating and the Daily Usage drop down menus and select the closest choices. If a choice does not apply, select 'Not Used' under the Daily Usage menu. After you select all the appliances that you are using, just click the button below.
